In the opening session of the second Test at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips dominated with the ball in spin-friendly conditions, and India fell into the trap they had set for New Zealand.
On Friday, October 24, spectators flocked to the stadium to watch the Indian hitters continue where they had left off during the second innings of the first Test match in Bengaluru. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, overnight hitters, sought to adjust to the challenging surface and restrained their innate attacking tendencies. Santner repeatedly got beyond Shubman’s outside edge while holding the ball on a string, and he also banged him on the pads a couple of times with the arm ball. Although Yashasvi didn’t receive many strikes during the partnership, he was more confident when facing Santner and Ajaz Patel, a left-arm spin combination.
Since the spinners were receiving a lot of sales from the surface, they managed to survive a couple near-misses. A Santner delivery that came in with the arm sent Shubman packing after he had added 34 runs to the overnight total. With their superb use of the conditions, the tourists continued to chip away at the wickets, opening the floodgates for them.
Santner’s full-length delivery was batted around by Virat Kohli, who was cleaned up for one. Glenn Phillips collected his first wicket of the Test match, ending Jaiswal’s tenacious innings. Rishabh Pant would have been responsible for saving his squad from difficulties once more. Phillips, however, removed the wicketkeeper-batter for a 19-ball 18.
Santner lost patience as Sarfaraz Khan was hit by a stray shot. On the stroke of lunch, Ravichandran Ashwin too lost his life, leaving India reeling at 103/7. They reached 50/1 at one point in the morning session but lost six wickets.

Santner scored his first four-for in Test cricket and was the wrecker-in-chief. As New Zealand dominated the first session, Phillips also contributed a few wickets.
Here’s a look at how ‘X’ users reacted to India’s horrific batting collapse:
Poor shot selection & some slower bowling from santner costed us this session. India made it tougher by not playing out the hard ball period from 15-40 & went harsh.
One good partnership from here will make it tough for both teams.

Never imagined India capitulating like this at home. On the verge of losing a test series since 2012. Batters are all at sea. Bear in mind NZ are coming from a series loss against Sri Lanka. Disappointing performance#INDvsNZ #INDvNZ #NZvsIND pic.twitter.com/Rjsutpbq8B
