Nonkululeko Mlaba, South Africa’s left-arm spinner, has got a demerit point for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s World Cup match against India. The incident occurred in India’s 17th over, when Mlaba, after dismissing Harleen Deol, waved farewell to the departing batter, a move that the ICC considered could have sparked a violent reaction.
According to an ICC release issued on Saturday, October 11, Nonkululeko Mlaba was found guilty of violating Article 2.5
The ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which prohibits “using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon her dismissal during an international match.”
On-field umpires Jacqueline Williams and Kim Cotton, as well as third umpire Candace Le Borde and fourth umpire Sue Redfern, levelled the charge. Mlaba admitted the offence and agreed to the sentence imposed by match referee Trudy Anderson, which included an official reprimand and one demerit point on her disciplinary record.
This demerit point will be on Mlaba’s record for 24 months. Under ICC rules, accruing four or more demerit points within this time frame can result in the suspension of one Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever occurs first.
South Africa defeated India by three wickets. India were knocked out for 251 in 49.5 overs, with Richa Ghosh leading the way with a superb 94. South Africa’s Chloe Tryon was outstanding with the ball, taking 3 for 32 in ten overs.
Chasing 252, South Africa reached the goal in 48.5 overs, with skipper Laura Wolvaardt anchoring the innings with 70 runs and Nadine de Klerk leading the chase with an unbeaten 84 off 54, claiming Player of the Match.
Following the results, India Women are in third in the points table, with South Africa Women in fourth place. India will face Australia on October 12, while South Africa will play Bangladesh on October 13, both in Visakhapatnam.
