Indian captain Shubman Gill discussed his expectations for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the next ODI series against Australia, which begins later this week. Gill recently led the Indian Test squad to a 2-0 series victory over the West Indies, striking a century in the first innings of the second Test in New Delhi, and his attention now shifts to leading the Men in Blue for the first time in ODIs.
Shubman Gill lauded the experienced combo of Rohit and Kohli for their extensive expertise, noting that both have been representing India for nearly two decades.
He expressed confidence that the duo only needed to take the pitch and demonstrate their expertise against Australia, noting that their presence adds considerable value to the team.
“They’ve been playing for India for the past 10–15 years and winning matches for us. The experience that they bring to the table is something every captain or every team wants. And that’s what we are looking forward to. We just want them to go out there and do their magic,” said Gill on JioHotstar.
The 26-year-old conceded that the Australian series promises to be highly competitive, with fans expecting top-class cricket throughout. The three-match ODI series is set to begin on Sunday, October 19, in Perth, which will be followed by the second and third match scheduled to be played in Adelaide and Sydney, respectively.
“We’ve been playing some of the best ODI cricket in the past two or three years, and nothing changes for us. It’s more or less the same team that we’re playing. So, I’m very excited to go out there and play in Australia,” said Gill.
The 26-year-old will lead the Indian team in white-ball cricket for the first time since taking over the reins from Rohit. Gill has already amassed 2,775 runs in 55 ODI innings at an impressive average of 59.04. With his successful leadership of the Test side, all eyes will now be on him as he guides India in the limited-overs format.
