The tragic demise of renowned Assamese and Bollywood vocalist Zubeen Garg has prompted tributes from all quarters. Riyan Parag, an Indian cricketer, was among those affected and tweeted a heartfelt statement grieving the iconic singer’s death.
The 52-year-old musician died on September 19 from a horrific scuba diving accident in Singapore. The renowned singer was in the island nation to perform at the North East Festival. According to sources, Garg first donned a life jacket but removed it soon after, citing pain. Moments later, he was discovered floating in the sea. Despite urgent rescue efforts and being taken to Singapore General Hospital, physicians were unable to resuscitate him.
His premature death has left a huge vacuum in the music industry, especially in Assam, where he was regarded as a cultural legend. Thousands of followers came in Guwahati to pay their final respects when his mortal remains arrived. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both expressed condolences and complimented Garg’s contributions to Indian music.
Meanwhile, Parag, who is from Assam, was deeply affected by the death.
The kid cricketer referred to Garg as “Dabangg Mama.” In an emotional video, Parag praised the singer as a warrior who not only revolutionised Assamese music, but also elevated it to national prominence with famous anthems like Ya Ali from the film Gangster (2006).
“Aap agar nahi talai to main Jubin Garg ki baat kar raha hoon, I used to call him Dabang Mama because he was such a warrior,” Parag said in a video message.
