Australian captain Pat Cummins has voiced trust in Sam Konstas‘ ability, despite his dismal performance in the ongoing West Indies-Australia Test series. Konstas, 19, has scored only 33 runs in his four innings so far.
Cummins believed Konstas was ‘good enough’ for the demands of Test cricket. He also gave the boy a few pointers to keep in mind the next time he goes up to bat.
“Look, he has been good. I believe that everybody beginning their Test career is chosen for a reason.
“We know he’s good enough,” Pat Cummins said, as reported by India Today.
“For someone like a batter, it might be, where are your scoring areas, what tempo do you normally operate at your best—and don’t get too caught up in every inning feeling like the biggest thing in the world,” said the coach.
The Australian captain urged for more time and tolerance for the youthful starter. In his debut game for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024-25, the top-order batter got off to a promising start. He hit a quick fifty in his first innings against a much more seasoned Indian bowling outfit. However, Konstas has battled to stay consistent since that encounter in Melbourne.
He has appeared cautious in the middle against the West Indians. The 33 runs have come in as many as 93 deliveries, and while strike rate isn’t an issue in red-ball cricket, the ace batsman will look to improve his performance when Australia face the West Indies in the last game of the three-match series at Sabina Park in Jamaica.
The Cummins-led unit will go into that match with an unassailable 0-2 lead in place. They won the first and second matches of the series by 159 runs and 133 runs, respectively. They will be keen on completing a series rout of the hosts before moving onto the 20-over leg of the multi-format tour.
