Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, dealt a blow just after noon by taking two wickets in an over against South Africa at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
He returned to the attack right after lunch and made an immediate effect in only his second over of the stint, in the 52nd over of the innings, with Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham at the crease for South Africa.
Cummins produced a quick nip-backer on the third delivery of the over, hitting Verreynne in line with middle and leg as the batter shuffled over and failed to flick. Following the appeal, Cummins collided with Verreynne, who had requested a review.
The ball-tracking replay revealed three reds, prompting Pat Cummins to yell in celebration as Verreynne was ejected.
Then, on the last delivery of the same over, Pat Cummins scored again. He set up the new hitter, Marco Jansen, with two-length pitches outside off. Jansen pushed forward on the following ball, but it bounced off the outside portion of his bat. The ball bounced up, and Cummins made an easy return catch. Cummins took multiple wickets in a single over for the 18th time during his Test career.

Speaking of the match, South Africa were bowled out for just 138 runs, with Cummins finishing with a six-wicket haul. In the process, he also reached the landmark of 300 Test wickets. With both teams having completed their first innings within two days, Australia holds a 74-run lead heading into the last two sessions of Day 2, with three days of play still remaining in the Ultimate Test.
