On Saturday, April 19, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) formally began the search for a new permanent head coach by publishing an advertisement on its website.
The cricket board is looking for a Level III qualified coach who has coached national or domestic cricket teams for at least ten years, according to the specifications. This change follows reports that Aaqib Javed has expressed disinterest in the position of head coach.
Gary Kirsten was replaced in November 2024 by Javed as the temporary head coach of white-ball. He became the all-format coach the next month after Jason Gillespie resigned as head coach in the Test format over of disagreements with the board. He was scheduled to leave after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Javed was granted an extension as head coach for the ensuing trip of New Zealand, despite Pakistan’s elimination in the opening round of the international competition. The Men in Green were thrashed in the subsequent ODI leg earlier this month after losing the five-match T20I series 1-4.
But the PCB has now made the decision not to grant the former Pakistan speedster another extension.
Javed has stated his desire in becoming the Director of the High-Performance Centre, for which the cricket board has also posted an advertisement, thus even though he would leave his position as interim head coach, he might still find a role in Pakistan’s cricket system. Interestingly, Nadeem Khan’s resignation left the High-Performance Center’s Director post open.
According to reliable sources, PCB is considering hiring a foreign coach because it has few resources left over from the former national cricket players. Sources stated that although the PCB has previously hired well-known individuals, it is doubtful that such applicants will be pursued this time.
