Aiden Markram will play a major role at the top of South Africa’s order as they look to win their first World Test Championship (WTC) final this week. The Proteas will face reigning champions Australia at the legendary Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The highly anticipated event begins on Wednesday, June 11.
Markram highlighted that South Africa only played two Test series before reaching the WTC The right-handed batter stated that in a two-game series, clubs have little room to recover.
He believes that this will help South Africa in the WTC, which is a one-off event.
“Most of our series have been two games, so you can’t start slow if you want to win. “That has helped us along the way,” Markram remarked during South Africa’s first training session at Lord’s.
“We understand the necessity of starting well, getting ahead of the game early, and how critical each session will be. There’s no going back. “We have to make sure we hit the ground running and are sharp on day one,” South Africa’s T20 captain continued.
When you open the batting, it is your obligation to calm the changing room down. Aiden Markram
Markram stated that an opener’s role is to provide a firm foundation for the squad while also calming jitters in the dressing room. He also added that facing world-class bowlers in the South African camp in the nets prepared him for the upcoming task.
“When you open the batting, it’s your role to calm the changing room, get the squad off to a strong start, and put us ahead of the game. it is the challenge, and it is what makes us excited. Preparing against world-class bowlers will only assist you as a hitter, no matter how uncomfortable it is at times. But that’s how you measure where your game is,” Markram explained.
South Africa won just one out of their first five Test in the 2023-2025 WTC cycle. However, they bounced back commendably to win seven Tests on the trot and punch their ticket to the summit clash.
