Prenelan Subrayen’s bowling action will be independently assessed at an ICC-accredited facility after it sparked legal issues.
Match officials have objected to his actions following the first of three one-day internationals between Australia and South Africa, which was staged on Tuesday at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns.
On his debut in an ODI, the 31-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder completed his 10-over quota. He concluded his innings with figures of 1/46, including the crucial wicket of Travis Head (27 off 24). The hosts’ first wicket came from a left-handed top-order batsman.
Corbin Bosch and Senuran Muthuswamy, both of whom played in the previous 20-over series, are the most likely contenders to replace the right-arm spinner if he is unable to continue playing in the series.
He had only recently stepped on the stage of international cricket. Subrayen picked up a four-wicket haul (4/42 in 10 overs) against Zimbabwe in the same Test in which Wiaan Mulder had amassed a mammoth triple-century in Bulawayo. Following an impressive form with the ball, the right-arm spinner was awarded a place in the ODI squad as well, and debuted on Tuesday.
South Africa defeated Australia by 98 runs in the first one-day international of the three-match series at Cairns. Keshav Maharaj contributed with the bat (13 off 12), before delivering a career-best effort (5/33 in 10 overs) to help his team take the lead. This was also South Africa’s largest run victory over Australia in ODIs played in Australia.
The Proteas scored 296/8 in 50 overs after being brought in to bat first. Aiden Markram (82 from 81), Temba Bavuma (65 from 74), and Matthew Breetzke (57 from 56) were the three half-centurions. Travis Head (4/57 in nine overs) was the surprising star bowler for Mitchell Marsh’s team.
Marsh was the only one from the home team who contributed substantially (88 off 96) during the run-chase. Ben Dwarshuis (33 off 52) was the only other batter with a 30-plus score (33 off 52) in a forgettable outing for the Aussies. The second game will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Friday, August 22, as the hosts will look to keep the series alive with a win.
