Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has granted a two-month extension to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s interim management committee. The length of the extension that the board’s patron has granted is longer than expected.
The Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC) ministry, which transmits information between the board and the Pakistani government, has recommended a two- to four-week extension for the current management committee, according to reports. The ministry had also requested that the Prime Minister nominate two candidates for chairman of the PCB board.
According to ESPN Cricinfo, there was no mention of the nominees in the IPC’s office’s notification. The extension granted by the prime minister has given the Najam Sethi-led PCB set-up until June 21, 2023, to implement the changes they intended to implement when they took over the board in December 2022 from the Ramiz Raja-led board.
Sethi, the leader of a 14-member management committee, arrived with instructions to supplant the board’s 2019 constitution with the 2014 version. The return of the regional and services department structure in domestic cricket as a result of the old constitution will entirely revamp Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure.
As per orders from the then-prime minister, Imran Khan, the domestic structure has operated on a six-team model of provincial teams based on the Australian Shield structure for the past three seasons.
The management committee will also serve as the board of directors.
According to the 2014 constitution, the management committee is also anticipated to form a board of governors and elect a chairman, with Sethi himself in the running. The election commissioner will convene a special meeting of the member boards to initiate this procedure.
In accordance with the 2014 constitution, the PCB board will consist of ten members: four regional representatives (the top four teams from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy), four representatives of service organizations (the top four department teams), and two members nominated by the patron or prime minister. The federal secretary of the IPC ministry (or any other officer designated by them) shall serve as an ex-officio, non-voting eleventh member. In an effort to foster continuity, each member of the board of governors serves for three years, which is equivalent to one term as chairman.
