Prithvi Shaw of Maharashtra was recently embroiled in a heated on-field incident with rookie all-rounder Musheer Khan during a practice match against his former team, Mumbai. Shaw has since apologised to Musheer, putting the situation to rest.
The event occurred during Maharashtra’s three-day friendly match against Mumbai at the MCA Stadium in Gahunje, Pune. Shaw, representing Maharashtra after relocating from Mumbai, hammered 181 off 220 balls, including 21 fours and three sixes, as he and Arshin Kulkarni had a 305-run opening wicket stand.
According to reports, the altercation started after Musheer sarcastically replied “Thank you” after dismissing Prithvi Shaw.
The comment enraged the Maharashtra hitter, who turned around and charged at the young bowler. The right-handed batter was spotted raising his bat in irritation before the umpire intervened to calm the tension. Video footage of the spat rapidly went viral, prompting both state bodies, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MACA), to investigate the incident.
Dilip Vengsarkar to speak to both players regarding the incident
Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap confirmed that former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar would speak to both players as part of a formal review. Similarly, MACA secretary Kamlesh Pisal stressed the importance of maintaining discipline, saying that the association would also seek a report on the incident before taking any decision. As per a Times of India report, Shaw later approached Musheer and apologised, saying he saw himself as an elder brother to the young Mumbai player.
“Prithvi realized his mistake and approached Musheer and apologised to him. Prithvi told him that ‘ I am like an elder brother to you. So all is well between the two,” a source told this paper.
Notably, Shaw shares a strong bond with Musheer’s elder brother, Sarfaraz Khan, his long-time friend and former teammate from Rizvi Springfield School and Mumbai. That friendship reportedly played a role in smoothing things over between the two players.
