Prithvi Shaw confirms transfer to Maharashtra ahead of 2025–26 season

Ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season, Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw has confirmed his transfer from Mumbai to Maharashtra. The young opener, who was once considered a long-term prospect for Indian cricket, believes this change will provide the right environment for his growth.

Last month, Shaw requested a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), which was officially granted in late June.

“At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer. I am deeply grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the opportunities and support I have received over the years,” Shaw said in a statement.

The 25-year-old made this decision after a tough phase in his cricketing career. After scoring a century on Test debut in 2018, he has struggled with fitness, form, and off-field discipline. He was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji squad last season and last featured in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final in December 2024. Rohit Pawar, president of the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), welcomed Shaw and handed him his jersey for the next season.

Shaw will join the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Mukesh Choudhary, and Rajneesh Gurbani in the Maharashtra setup. Meanwhile, in the previous Ranji Trophy season, Maharashtra failed to make it past the group stage, securing only two wins in seven matches.

However, they had a better run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, finishing as group-toppers and reaching the semi-finals. The right-handed batter has scored 4556 runs in 58 first-class matches at an average of 46.02, including 13 centuries. In List A cricket, he averages 55.72 with 3399 runs and a strike rate of 125.74. In T20s, he has scored 2902 runs at a strike rate of 151.54.
