In Match 2 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) 165 thanks to a damaging display from Shafali Verma. To set the tone, she hammered Saika Sihaque for 22 runs in her opening over and ultimately struck 43 off just 18 deliveries. Head coach Charlotte Edwards of MI, however, says she is pleased with how her team recovered from that attack.
Considering our bowling and bowling choices, I believe Shafali Verma played exceptionally well, which is what I believe occurs in T20 cricket.
Our response was what I was most proud of as a squad. Our efforts were not in vain. We continued to arrive with vigour. During the post-game press conference, Edwards stated, “We continued to be aggressive with the ball.”
The only hitters that really stood out were Harmanpreet Kaur (42) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (80), who both did an outstanding job. As a result of the two veterans’ 73-run stand, MI fell behind 105/2 to 164 all out.
Lower-order and middle-order hitters were supposed to push the score well over 200, but they fell short. The innings’ pivotal moment, according to Edwards, was Kerr’s run out at the non-striker’s end. Following a major partnership like Harman and Nat is incredibly difficult, in my opinion. They made it seem so simple, didn’t they, and I believe that may have contributed to the difficulty.
“In this game, I believe Amelia Kerr’s run out was huge. We were going great, in my opinion. She has a really cool head, and she would have pulled us up to that level of 180-plus and given Nat more freedom to play. There were a few casualties there, obviously, and Nat had to farm the strike towards the end. So, while it’s clear that not hitting our overs out is a problem, I’m not worried about it at all.”
In their upcoming game against the Gujarat Giants on Tuesday, February 18, MI will look to turn things around.
