Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of India, wants the team’s leaders to give Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma a break before the important ODI World Cup 2023, which will start in India on October 5. Notably, the senior pair has been playing cricket nonstop since February, when they played a four-match Test and three-match ODI series against Australia, followed by the IPL 2023.
In the first game of the 2023 World Test Championship final, neither Rohit (15) nor Kohli (14), who were the top two teams, scored a lot of runs. Shastri said that both players can play all three formats in the future. However, he said that they don’t need to play all three formats before the World Cup so that younger players can get a chance to play.
“I’d say that it’s hard to play all three forms. There are people who know how to play. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, for instance, can still play all three forms,” Shastri said on Star Sports.
Ravi Shastri also said that the older players could be added to the team right before the World Cup.
“That said, they don’t have to play in every game; give other young players a chance. The World Cup is coming up, which is a big event. Bring them back to the team close to that point and let them play with the team for a while,” he said.
Is India on the verge of another loss in the WTC final in 2023?
India hasn’t won an ICC title since 2013, when they won the Champions Trophy. Since then, they have made at least the semi-finals of every ICC tournament except the T20 World Cup in 2021. So, the upcoming ODI World Cup is very important for the Men in Blue as they try to win an ICC title for the first time in ten years.
In the first test of the World Test Championship final in 2023, India scored a total of 296 runs, with Ajinkya Rahane scoring the most with 89. Before the second game, Australia had a huge lead of 173 runs.
