Ravichandran Ashwin, a hometown hero, has received a special honor from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). The residential street of the former Indian cricket player, Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in West Mambalam, has been renamed Ravichandran Ashwin Road by the local governing body.
According to the sources, Ravichandran Ashwin’s Carrol Ball Event and Marketing Company submitted the application to the GCC.
It asked for the famous cricket player to be called after either Ashwin’s residential street or Arya Street. After acknowledging the proposal, the GCC renamed Ashwin’s residential street in his honor.
Ashwin is the second-highest wicket-taker in Test matches for the Indian men’s team and the best cricketer Chennai and Tamil Nadu have ever produced for the country. After starting his Indian Premier League (IPL) career with the Chennai Super Kings, he is expected to play for the local team in 2025.
During the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia, Ashwin just announced his retirement from international cricket. Along with Siddharth Monga, he co-wrote his autobiography, “I Have the Streets,” which delves deeply into Ashwin’s connection to Chennai in general and street cricket in particular.
Notably, streets in both hometowns are already named after former Indian Test captain Anil Kumble and hockey goalie PR Sreejesh.
