On Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston, England finally made progress before lunchtime, with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s outstanding innings ending just 11 runs short of his sixth Test century. Following up his 41-run overnight total, Jadeja and Shubman Gill faced England’s bowlers in a pivotal 203-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
With a flick off his pads, the southpaw reached his fifty off eighty balls. He was at ease at the crease and even signalled early in the day by smashing Shoaib Bashir for a massive straight six. But Josh Tongue’s unexpected bouncer was what ultimately put a stop to his innings. Tongue startled Jadeja with a flawless short delivery that came from around the wicket. The left-hander was only able to glove it to keeper Jamie Smith after attempting to push it away while leaping in the crease. Jadeja scored 89 runs off 137 balls, including a six and ten boundaries.

Shubman Gill nears maiden double ton
At the other end, Captain Gill continued to add runs to the tally. He reached his highest Test score, going past 150 with back-to-back boundaries. The batter has played the anchor role perfectly and made sure to keep the scoreboard ticket. At lunch, he remains unbeaten on 168 and is inching closer to a maiden Test double hundred.
Meanwhile, India, which started the day at 310/5, have now progressed to 419/6, thanks largely to the Gill-Ravindra Jadeja stand.
While the visitors are in a strong position, they will be worried about the lower-order collapse that cost them significantly in the first Test. With just Washington Sundar at the crease and the tail to follow, India will be desperate to avoid a repeat of Headingley, where the final five wickets fell for next to nothing. England will feel happy with Jadeja’s dismissal and will now aim to run through the tail quickly, hoping to restrict India to under 500.
