After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s historic IPL 2025 triumph, a tragedy occurred during the euphoric atmosphere when a big crowd surged outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium, resulting in a horrible stampede that killed 11 people and injured many others.
Following this, Karnataka police apprehended four people who were involved in the incident. Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s Head of Marketing and Revenue at Diageo India, was arrested at the Bengaluru airport while flying to Mumbai. Notably, Sosale was acknowledged as a key person in the planning of the celebration.
Three DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt. Ltd. personnel were detained, including Kiran Kumar (Senior Event Manager), Sunil Mathew (Vice President Business Affairs), and Sumanth. DNA Entertainment organised the victory parade and public gathering.
Previously, a FIR was filed against RCB, DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA),
Charging them with several offences, including culpable homicide that does not constitute murder. Furthermore, when investigators attempted to locate the KSCA secretary and treasurer, they allegedly fled.
Simultaneously, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered the suspension of numerous top police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, Additional Commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash, and other officers from Cubbon Park Police Station, citing a failure to ensure public safety.
The Karnataka government has delegated investigating authority to a one-man judicial committee chaired by retired High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha, with a 30-day deadline to present the findings. The inquiry has been complemented by a CID investigation, as directed by the state cabinet.
Furthermore, the Karnataka High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident, requesting specific explanations from the government on crowd management preparations, event approvals, and the reasoning behind the decision to allow unfettered public admission without enough infrastructure.
