Bengaluru was all set to welcome and celebrate its home team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in big style after they won their first IPL title on Tuesday night. However, the much-anticipated open-top bus procession to commemorate the historic victory has been cancelled at the last minute due to worries about traffic congestion and public safety.
RCB concluded an 18-year quest for the IPL trophy by defeating Punjab Kings in a dramatic final in Ahmedabad.
The triumph sparked wild celebrations around Bengaluru, with fans dancing in the streets, setting off fireworks, and screaming slogans.
The franchise had previously scheduled a joyful open-bus procession for 3:30 PM IST on June 4. The itinerary was scheduled to begin at Vidhana Soudha following the team’s meeting with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and end at the historic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a felicitation event was planned. However, only hours after the announcement, Bengaluru traffic police denied permission for the march, citing safety and logistical problems.
Authorities indicated that handling traffic along the one-kilometer stretch in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) would be extremely difficult. Officials from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) apparently attempted to reach an agreement, but the parade has been cancelled in the sake of public order.
Following the judgement, RCB opted to move on with a new plan. The players will be honoured in a private ceremony at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium from 5 PM to 6 PM IST. Access to the ceremony is limited to ticket and pass holders only. Authorities have asked participants to use public transport, particularly the Namma Metro, as parking near the event would be exceedingly limited. Citizens have also been encouraged to avoid the CBD area between 3 and 8 p.m. to alleviate the anticipated traffic congestion.
