On Sunday, April 13th, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will play the Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur while wearing their recognisable green jerseys.
The franchise’s larger sustainability efforts are emphasised by the green jerseys, which are constructed from recycled cloth and are intended to increase public awareness of environmental protection and conservation. As a carbon-neutral Twenty20 squad, RCB hopes to further include supporters in its environmental purpose with the goal of being carbon positive by implementing this project at the home stadium for season-long fan interaction.
Speaking on the initiative, Rajesh Menon, COO, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, said: “For us it is about being bold, both on and off the pitch. Our green jerseys are more than just a symbol; they are a call to action. As proud representatives of the Garden City, sustainability is a natural priority for us. Through this initiative, we aim to leverage the cultural and social power of RCB to drive awareness and inspire fans to take small steps towards conservation.”
The sustainability initiatives of RCB are thorough and data-driven. The franchise can precisely monitor its ecological impact across all operations thanks to regular carbon audits. By measuring the influence of spectator travel on overall emissions, the franchise conducts comprehensive studies to record their carbon footprint, including emissions from diesel generators inside the stadium and fan journeys to and from the venue.
A key component of RCB’s dedication to sustainability is teamwork.
Over the course of the season, a detailed evaluation is conducted of the travel footprint of the cheer squad, athletes, and support personnel. This involves an examination of the carbon emissions per room night and a thorough assessment of the team’s accommodations for both home and away games. To further ensure that every facet of their environmental impact is taken into consideration and addressed, emissions from the stadium’s waste are measured according to the type of waste.
RCB uses a number of strategies to counteract their carbon offset, including trash management and segregation at the stadium, the use of renewable energy sources including wind and solar power, and other projects to lessen reliance on traditional resources.
RCB’s wider outreach from a community standpoint includes last year’s creation of green schools and lake revitalisation projects throughout Bengaluru. Fans become active participants in the environmental movement by being asked to vow to conserve energy.
