Ricky Ponting discussed India’s future in Test cricket in the coming months, in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will retire from the longest format of the game in May 2025. Prior to India’s tour of England, Ponting believed it would be difficult to replace players of Rohit and Virat’s calibre. However, he believed that with the quantity of talent available, India might swiftly recover.
The Australian claimed to have witnessed firsthand how young players emerge in the IPL quickly, are fast-tracked into the Indian team, and reproduce their talent with high-level performances. While Ponting believed that young players lacked experience, he predicted that India’s talent would secure its success.
“It’s always difficult to replace individuals who have been around for a long time and have played so many Test matches. But if any country can accomplish it quickly, India can because of its abundance of young talent,” Ponting stated in the ICC Review.
“I’ve seen it firsthand for the past ten years in the IPL, and we’ve witnessed the rise of Jaiswal and other players who came into international cricket with India and performed admirably very immediately. The skill side is one thing that can be replaced, and I believe India will be able to do so quickly, but the experience will be a major issue for them,” Ponting noted.
They will still have some experience with KL. Rahul & Bumrah: Ricky Ponting
The PBKS Head Coach stated that even without Rohit and Virat, India has the experience of Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul. He finished by stating that India can handle the transition time better than most other teams.
“So, even with a young skipper like Shubman Gill, they’ll have some experience around with KL Rahul, Bumrah, and other players. But if you look at a rebuilding phase, I believe India can handle it better than most other teams,” Ponting said.
