The 2025 edition of the IPL has seen the Punjab Kings experience one of their best seasons yet. The Shreyas Iyer-led team has not only qualified for the Playoffs, but also secured a top-two finish, giving them an advantage in the latter stages of the flagship tournament. Their head coach, Ricky Ponting, has offered his unfiltered thoughts on PBKS’ outstanding season this year, which was guided by a comprehensive team effort.
Ricky Ponting has stated that while they are now leading the Points Table after nine wins and four losses to complete their league stage campaign, it is not yet an achievement.
The statement made by the former Australia captain hints at one thing: earning the elusive silverware, which PBKS has been after for the past seventeen years.
“I believe it’s clear that this is a very skilled team, and they’re all on the same page and headed in the same direction. It’s been a fantastic accomplishment up to this point, but looking back, we haven’t accomplished anything. That’s the one thing I’ve been telling the players since we qualified,” the 50-year-old remarked during the post-match press conference following the MI game, as reported by The Daily Star.
“My goal has always been to finish in the top two, and we’ve achieved that now. “It’s a really happy group, and we’ve enjoyed each other’s company for the last 10 weeks, but we still have another week to go,” the three-time World Cup winner explained.
The dressing room has been top-notch, which has worked quite well for us. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer, PBKS’ skipper and middle-order batsman, has not only demonstrated excellent leadership qualities but has also been the team’s leading run scorer this season. The PBKS captain has publicly lauded the atmosphere in the dressing room, which he says has been ‘top-notch’ this year.
“I personally believe we should retain that friendship regardless of the circumstances. When you’re down in the dumps, it’s simple to turn on one other and gossip about each other. I believe the dressing room has been top-notch since game one, and it has worked extremely well for us,” the captain stated.
