But according to a Sky Sports report, Bumrah has decided to withdraw from the race due to workload issues, leaving Gill and Rishabh Pant as the front-runners.
In the longest format of cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is searching for a new skipper after Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday, May 7. According to a number of sources, Shubman Gill is the front-runner, but KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah were also rumoured to be in the running.
Due to workload, it is believed that Bumrah, the front-runner to succeed Rohit Sharma as captain, does not wish to commit to playing all five Test matches in a series. “The selectors would prefer a captain who can consistently feature across a whole series, and he is unlikely to play in all five Test matches against England,” the article says.
KL Rahul is not considered for the Test captaincy.
KL Rahul isn’t vying for the esteemed position, though. The Karnataka batsman has made his international debut in 2014 and has since participated in 58 Test matches, 85 ODIs, and 72 T20Is. Moreover, he has led India in three Test matches, twelve ODIs, and one Twenty20 International. Under his leadership, India won two and lost one of the three Test matches they played.
Rahul’s age (33) and inconsistency are the main reasons he is not being considered for the position of India’s red-ball captain, according to a recent report.
Since KL Rahul is already older than thirty-three and has struggled with consistency despite being one of Australia’s top players, it is known that he is not being regarded as a possibility,” the report stated.
One of India’s finest players in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy was Rahul. He recorded two fifties and 276 runs from five games.
The five-match Test series between India and England in the UK is their next task. Leeds will host the opening Test on June 20. It is anticipated that Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal would open the batting. The right-handed batter has a respectable record when playing in England.
At an average of 34.11, Rahul has amassed 614 runs in nine Test matches. He has accumulated two hundred and fifty points. In September 2018, he hit 149 runs from 224 deliveries in the fourth innings of the Test match at The Oval, his greatest score in the European country. In the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, Rahul will be hoping for more knocks of this nature as India looks to make amends.
