India’s Rishabh Pant has received an official reprimand for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct on the third day of the first Test against England at Headingley on Sunday. Pant was judged to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, which prohibits “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.”
In addition, one demerit point has been added to Pant’s disciplinary record, as this was his first infraction in 24 months. If the wicketkeeper-batsman accumulates eight or more demerit points (equal to two suspension points) in a 24-month period, he will be banned from one Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever comes first. The athlete will be spared such suspension points if he does not commit the same offence again.
The event occurred near the conclusion of England’s first innings’ 61st over, when the umpires used the ball gauge to examine the form of the ball and decided against changing it.
Rishabh Pant objected to the umpires’ ruling by throwing the ball on the ground in front of them.
Pant admitted the violation and accepted the sentence imposed by Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Mike Burns all made the charge.
It is vital to note that all Level 1 violations result in a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of the player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
