Rishabh Pant suffered a left index finger injury while attempting to stop a Jasprit Bumrah delivery on Day 1 of India’s third Test against England at London’s renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground. He did not keep wickets for the remainder of the Test match, as Dhruv Jurel came in. Despite his agony, Pant batted in both innings and scored 74 and nine.
On India’s first day of training after losing the third Test by 22 runs at the Home of Cricket, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said Pant’s injury would be monitored ahead of the fourth Test, which is scheduled to take place at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester beginning Wednesday, July 23.
Pant was reported to be playing as a specialist batter in the Manchester Test, with Jurel performing wicketkeeping duties. However, India’s most recent training session will provide much-needed solace to Indian supporters, as Pant has begun practicing wicketkeeping drills. While the drills were simple, the fact that the Indian vice-captain has begun wicketkeeping is a strong sign that he is nearing the end of his recovery.
Sahil Malhotra, a Times of India journalist, posted a video on ‘X’ that showed Pant donning wicketkeeping gloves during practice. He noticed that the Delhi cricketer’s damaged finger was heavily wrapped but looked fine while executing the workouts.
