Riyan Parag, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals (RR), was fined INR 12 lakh for keeping up a slow over-rate against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2025 Indian Premier League. On March 30, RR won by a slim margin of six runs at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati; however, the team could not finish their overs in the allotted time, which resulted in Parag’s penalty.
The IPL’s Code of Conduct states in Article 2.22 that captains are responsible for their team’s excessive performance.
Riyan Parag was fined INR 12 lakh because this was RR’s first infraction of the season.
Captains who committed repeated crimes in past IPL seasons faced match suspensions; however, a new rule that was implemented before to IPL 2025 exempts captains from bans and instead imposes demerit points and monetary fines.
After Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was punished following the match against Gujarat Titans, Parag became the second captain in IPL 2025 to be penalised for a sluggish over-rate.
At a meeting of team captains in Mumbai on March 20, it was decided to penalise captains financially instead of suspending them. Captains who commit slow over-rate infractions will be penalised demerit points under the new rule, which will be calculated over a three-year period.
RR records their first IPL 2025 victory.
In spite of the penalty, the Royals defeated CSK with a strong showing, earning their first victory of the year. With an impressive 81 off 36 balls, Nitish Rana was the standout batsman, and Wanindu Hasaranga’s four wickets made sure CSK missed the 183-run mark. In the last over, Sandeep Sharma of RR remained composed, removing MS Dhoni and limiting CSK to 176/6.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja’s late appearance gave the previous champions hope, while CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad had an outstanding innings with a half-century. But for the majority of the game, Parag and his team maintained control because to their bowlers’ efficient execution of strategies.
