The Men in Blue have not lost a series in the shortest format since Suryakumar Yadav was named India’s permanent T20I captain last year. But during this time, the 34-year-old hasn’t been playing well at bat.
The Mumbai batsman has only amassed 166 runs from 11 innings in T20I cricket during the 2024–25 season. Only 28 runs from five innings were scored by Suryakumar in the just finished five-match series against England. Although Robin Uthappa is happy with his former Kolkata Knight Riders teammate’s captaincy, he believes that his batting might use some work. But the former batter-wicketkeeper claimed that Suryakumar’s return to the field is just a matter of time.
“I would like to discuss Suryakumar Yadav’s form.
His leadership level is comparable now that he is captain of the T20I team, but his performance hasn’t improved. And that makes sense given how he entered international cricket and how well he did. His decline in form is not shocking, in my opinion, but I don’t think it will continue [for very long]. He’ll be back among the runs, in my opinion,” Uthappa posted on his YouTube page.
The former cricket player who is now a broadcaster supported the Mumbai hitter to play with good intentions and lead the team from the front to get the desired outcomes for himself and the squad.
In any case, when you talk about playing ultra-aggressive cricket, you want to lead from the front as a leader. You want to lead from the front as a leader, and I believe he is doing just that. Soon, he’ll be back to his best, and runs will come off the bat with ease,” Uthappa continued. The IPL will help him go back to his best: Uthappa
Uthappa is optimistic that the star batsman will use the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season to bounce back from his recent slide in form. Prior to the IPL 2025 mega-auction, the Mumbai Indians paid INR 16.35 crore to retain the latter.
Additionally, he will use the IPL to regain his form, resume his runs, and develop into the daring, dangerous player by the end of the competition. “We’ll see the old Suryakumar Yadav,” Uthappa said.
On March 21, the 18th IPL season will get underway. KKR will enter to defend the championship at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where the opening ceremony and final will be held.
