Rohit Sharma visited Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife’s book launch event and was asked about his father’s response to his Test retirement. The former Indian Test captain said that his father is a big follower of Test cricket. Sharma recalled an incident in which his father was unimpressed after he scored 264 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2014.
Rohit said that his father used to go into great length about his useful contributions in Test cricket, despite the fact that they were not as high as his ODI numbers. Rohit thought it was unusual for someone who had watched his career closely from Under-19 to the top level.
“I still remember scoring 264 in an ODI. He was like, OK, well played. Well done. He showed little excitement. It’s vital to get out there and stuff. But even if I had good 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s, people in Test cricket would talk to me about it in depth. That’s the kind of affection he had for the game. “And he’s obviously seen you rise through the ranks,” Rohit said at the occasion, as reported by Hindustan Times.
My father was a devotee of Test cricket: Rohit Sharma
The Indian batter claimed that his father worked for a transportation company and, like his mother, played an important role in his rise to prominence as a cricket player. He then stated that his father is not a fan of limited-overs cricket and prefers to watch Test cricket, showing his enthusiasm for the game.
“My father worked at a transportation company. As I already stated, in addition to what my mother accomplished, my father was heavily involved in making sacrifices for our survival. But my father has always been a lover of Test cricket. “He dislikes this new-age cricket,” Rohit said at the event.
The great cricketer opened up about his father’s reaction to his retirement from Test cricket. The veteran player stated that his father had watched him play Tests and praised him. He confirmed that his father was sad to hear about his retirement. However, Rohit Sharma stated that his father was pleased for him to have a successful profession. Sharma concluded by expressing his gratitude for everything his father has done for him.
“My father has seen me play a lot of cricket with the red ball, certainly. As a result, he has a strong preference for red ball cricket. And, of course, he was saddened when I announced my retirement. However, I was also happy. But, yes, that is my father. And he has certainly played a significant influence in where I am today. Without their assistance, it would not have been feasible,” Rohit said.
