In the ODI series against India, Rohit Sharma will captain the team once again following his June 29 victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. Washington Sundar requested LBW in the opening ODI at R Premadasa Stadium, but the umpire seemed uninterested. Rohit gave a show of his casual best. The Indian opener, who was first apprehensive to request a review, chastised Sundar for not knowing for sure why he was dismissed.
The ball struck his pads and showed a small deflection when Sundar produced a near-perfect yorker to Dunith Wellalage on the fourth ball of the 29th over. Wellalage missed the ball entirely. After thinking about it, Sundar began persuading Rohit to have a review, but the wicketkeeper and the bowler appeared uninterested. With a calm expression on his face, Rohit let the bowler know how frustrated he was and told him to make up his mind.
I heard Rohit say, “You tell me, why are you staring at me, should I do everything? Mereko kya dekh raha he, sab kuch mai hi karu.”

Nissanka and Wellalage prevent another collapse in Sri Lanka.
When Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first, it was an extremely bad move that saw the hosts reduced to 101 for five in just 27 overs. The spinners from India carried out the additional attack, limiting the Lankan Lions to 230 runs for eight wickets after 50 overs. While other bowlers contributed one wicket apiece, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel each claimed two wickets.

Another batting meltdown akin to the third Twenty20 International was imminent for Sri Lanka. Pathum Nissanka, the opener, clung onto one end as the other end’s wickets fell. He persisted till the 27th over, scoring a tenacious 56 off 75 balls. Wellalage, without any previous notable knock, scored a decent total for his team with an unbeaten 67 off 65 balls, an out-of-character innings.
