Indian captain Rohit Sharma has formally ended rumours about his future in the One-Day International format by stating that he has no intention of retiring from it. Following his historic victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Sunday, March 9 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, he stated: “I want to clarify that I am not going anywhere, I am not retiring from this format.”
Rohit Sharma decision to retire from Twenty20 international cricket (T20I) following India’s World Cup victory in June 2024 was a major talking point during the competition.
Many anticipated that, given his age and workload management skills, he would go a similar route after winning the Champions Trophy. All of these rumours were, however, dispelled by the 37-year-old, who expressed his wish to keep playing in the 50-over format.

The leadership of the Nagpur native has been crucial to India’s progress. The team has advanced to four ICC finals under his direction and won two significant championships: the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
He took the lead in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, scoring 76 off 83 balls to set up a strong chase of 251. The Men in Blue maintained their composure to win by four wickets despite a comeback from the Kiwis.
Rohit’s decision to skip the Sydney Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy sparked initial rumours about his future. He has dispelled all reservations about his potential retirement following the Boxing Day Test, despite numerous speculations to the contrary.
“We’ll see. For now, it is what it is. That’s it,” he continued.
