In an intriguing twist, Indian ODI skipper Rohit Sharma has reportedly indicated a desire to play in the three unofficial ODIs between India A and Australia A. The series is set to take place in Kanpur from September 30 to October 5, shortly before India’s full trip of Australia, which will include three ODIs and five T20Is.
Rohit Sharma was last seen in international action during the Champions Trophy final earlier this year, and he later declared his retirement from Test cricket.
According to, the 38-year-old intends to use the unofficial ODIs as preparation for the Australia tour, ensuring he is not underprepared for the hard conditions Down Under. He is also seen in training with Abhishek Nayar, and the Australian series could be one of his final tasks in international cricket.
He is currently only active in the 50-over format after retiring from T20Is and Tests in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The reports further stated that selectors are already looking beyond Rohit as they prepare for the ODI World Cup in 2027. As part of this preparation, he may be requested to compete in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which begins in December 2025, in order to remain eligible for the national ODI squad.
Additionally, the Indian selectors are scheduled to meet after the Asia Cup to examine the future composition of the ODI team. Shreyas Iyer, a dependable middle-order hitter, is apparently the frontrunner to succeed Rohit as the next ODI skipper whenever the veteran retires.
This development highlights Rohit’s intent to maintain match fitness and remain involved at the highest level, even as the team looks toward a transition. His participation in the India A series could provide an opportunity for the Men in Blue to fine-tune strategies ahead of a challenging Australian tour, while also giving selectors a chance to evaluate potential leadership options for the coming years.
