Rohit Sharma survived two early dismissals during the Eliminator of the present Indian Premier League match between the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The two wasted opportunities occurred in the second and third overs of MI’s innings, after they won the toss and chose to bat first.
Gerald Coetzee’s first opportunity to send the former MI skipper back to the shed came at a deep backward square leg. He failed to hold on to a top-edge that fell aloft after racing to his right. The second one was fairly standard. Rohit attempted to swing Mohammed Siraj’s delivery, which was short of excellent length. Kusal Mendis got both gloves on the ball but still squandered the opportunity, slightly overrunning to grab the edge of the MI batter’s blade.

Earlier that evening, MI won the toss and chose to bat first. Jonny Bairstow, a wicketkeeper and batsman, replaced Ryan Rickelton on a like-for-like basis. The English cricketer stepped in as a temporary replacement for Rickelton, who had to travel to England to prepare for the World Test Championship’s 2023-25 final.
GT replaced Mendis for Jos Buttler, who, like Rickelton, was required to travel to England for national duty. He will join the Three Lions as part of their setup for the current white-ball series against the West Indies. Buttler had 538 runs in 13 innings this season, with an excellent strike rate of 163.03. The former MI player had five half-centuries to his name.
Speaking of the ongoing match, the Hardik Pandya-led side would be aiming to post a steep total for their opposition considering the start they’ve received from Rohit and Bairstow in the powerplay. The two of them combined to post 79 for the loss of no wickets. The winner of this fixture will take on Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1.
