'Shami recently had a setback in his recovery'- Rohit Sharma on Mohammed Shami's return

The captain of India, Rohit Sharma, has stated that there may be more delays in Mohammed Shami‘s return to international cricket. An unforeseen setback in the pacer’s recuperation has raised questions about his availability for the forthcoming pivotal series. He has been out since the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

In just seven games, Shami took 24 wickets at an average of 10.70, despite suffering from ankle problems and having to have injections. He had Achilles tendon surgery in London in February after the competition with the goal of making a return in the next Australia series. Sharma revealed that Shami has just had a setback in his recuperation process.

We are having a hard time deciding if he will be fit for this series or the Australia series at this time. A recent setback for him was that he experienced unexpected knee edema. His knee was swollen as he was working out and eventually reaching 100% fitness. That caused him to regress somewhat in his recuperation, so he had to start over,” Rohit stated the night before India’s opening Test match against New Zealand.

It must be quite difficult for a fast bowler to have missed so much cricket: Rohit Sharma

The renowned opener discussed the difficulties involved in a fast bowler’s comeback after a protracted hiatus. Bringing him in too soon could make his injuries worse, according to Sharma.

“He hasn’t played cricket in more than a year. Fast bowlers have a difficult time coming out and performing at their peak after missing so much games. That’s not the best. We will want to allow him adequate time to heal and reach full fitness. He has been given a road map by the physicians, trainers, and physiotherapists. Before playing cricket for his country, he is expected to play a few matches. We’ll assess his current status following this New Zealand series before deciding when he’ll be ready for us in the Australia , he continued.

The captain also mentioned that the NCA doctors and physiotherapists are collaborating closely with the pacer to get him back on the field because the team needs Shami to be totally healthy for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

He is currently at NCA, where he collaborates with the doctors and physiotherapists. All we can do is cross our fingers. We want him to be in perfect physical condition. Above all, we do not want to send an undercooked Shami to Australia. For us, that will not be the best course of action,” he said.
