After leading the Men in Blue to their first Champions Trophy victory in twelve years on Sunday, March 9, Rohit Sharma confirmed that he was not considering retirement, which pleased former India cricketer Yograj Singh. Rohit, who made a game-winning 76 off 83 balls in the final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, addressed questions regarding his future with the national squad during the press conference held after the game.
Before declaring their retirements, Yograj supported Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play at least till the 2027 ODI World Cup. No one can make Rohit and Kohli hang their boots, according to the former Indian seamer.
“The fact that Rohit Sharma stated he would not be retiring is the nicest thing. Excellent work, my son. Virat and Rohit cannot be retired. The 2027 ODI World Cup victory should make them consider retiring. India Today cited Yograj as adding, “I had stated this prior to India’s victory.”
Rohit Sharma’s fitness was being questioned by some: Yograj Singh
Rohit was attacked on social media by certain fans due to his fitness, and Yuvraj Singh’s father came out to defend him. Yograj scolded the detractors, stating that before criticising Rohit, others such as Congress leader Shama Mohamed should demonstrate their suitability.
“Rohit Sharma’s fitness was being questioned by several. I would like to know how fit Madam (Congress leader Shama Mohamed) is. They are not in the right position to comment on players,” Yograj said.
During the 2025 Champions Trophy, Rohit provided India some fast starts but was unable to muster a significant lead going into the final. But with an over remaining, the 37-year-old’s half-century helped India win the summit match by four wickets, saving his best knock for the biggest stage. With 218 runs from five innings at an average of 54.50, Kohli ended up being the Asian giants’ second-highest run scorer.
