Sam Curran hopes to return to the England squad, and he plans to use the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as a springboard to do it. After the five-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) paid INR 2.40 crore for his services at the mega-auction last year, the seam-bowling all-rounder has rejoined the team.
Since his 2018 international debut, Curran has represented England in 24 Test matches, 35 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, he was named Player of the Tournament as England advanced to the finals of the international competition. He did, however, make his final appearance for the national team during the Caribbean tour in November 2024.
The England team for the 2025 Champions Trophy did not include Sam Curran.
Jos Buttler gave up his position as captain after the European team was eliminated in the group stage. With a new white-ball captain to be named soon after Buttler’s resignation and Brendon McCullum taking over as England’s coach in all formats from the beginning of this year, Curran is optimistic that there will be plenty of opportunities available. He is aware that he may win over McCullum and regain his spot on the national team recall list with a successful tenure with the Super Kings.
Getting back into the (England white-ball) side is probably my major goal. I feel I haven’t really found the ideal role with England. The fact that they stacked the batting in the Champions Trophy and the series in India (in the beginning of 2025) by playing a lot of batters and those extra quicks was obvious. I believe that if I play my part with England correctly, I’ll return, but who can predict what will happen next? “I have to continue doing that,” Curran said on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, confirming the cliche that he “needs” runs and wickets.
“I’m feeling great right now. I was definitely devastated when it happened, but I feel like I’ve grown up enough to handle the negative things. I sincerely hope that, with a little more experience and more situational awareness, I can rejoin the team. There is only one way to accomplish it, so maybe I can have a fantastic IPL season and see where we stand come summertime,” he continued.
