Former English cricketer Samit Patel spoke about his cricketing future after playing Derbyshire for the final time in their final group-stage game at the 2025 T20 Blast. He was in the latter months of his deal. However, he will leave before the start of the One-Day Cup.
While Samit delivered an equivocal response regarding his future in domestic cricket, he appeared to be thrilled about a prospective coaching post later on.
“Who knows?” It could be my final game in domestic cricket, but it might not be. I’ve given it my all for two years, and it’s been disheartening that we haven’t advanced to the quarterfinals or Finals Day. Hopefully, things don’t stop there; hopefully, I’ll be able to contribute to the club’s white-ball cricket future. The knowledge I have, I’ve played over 430 (426) T20s, I’ve got a lot to give, especially to the younger guys in the squad’, Samit told BBC Radio Derby, as reported by BBC.
In terms of his domestic cricket career in England, Samit Patel spent 22 of his 24 years with Nottinghamshire before moving on to Derbyshire.
He has scored 6891 runs and taken 364 wickets in 426 T20s so far. The all-rounder has also proven to be an excellent fielder, making 118 catches in his 20-over career.
Samit has never played in Derbyshire’s red-ball unit in the County Championship. His latest appearance was in September 2020. Throughout his time with Derbyshire, the club has failed to progress beyond the group stage.
The seasoned campaigner last represented England in November 2015. He played six Tests, 36 ODIs, and 18 T20Is. As of now, he is featuring for England Champions at the ongoing World Championship of Legends in England.
