When Punjab Kings (PBKS) decided to play the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday during the 2025 Indian Premier League, the RR got off to a great start. With a 53-run partnership in six overs, returning skipper Sanju Samson and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal took control of the powerplay.
Sanju Samson was in good health and showed no signs of pain after returning to action after a brief layoff due to an injury.
From the beginning, the pair placed pressure on the PBKS bowlers by taking advantage of the new ball and the fielding constraints. Both batsmen appeared to be in total control as they punished sloppy deliveries and rotated the strike effectively. With his stroke play, Jaiswal in particular appeared fluid, and Samson gave him praise.
But in the eleventh over, when Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson returned to the attack, the tide turned. Ferguson produced a full and quick delivery, hitting the off stump with a top speed of 144.2 kmph. Samson tried lofting it over the infield but was unable to achieve the desired elevation. A mistimed shot went straight to PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer at mid-off as the bat twisted in his hands due to the ball’s speed.

Frustrated by the dismissal, Samson hurled his bat in the air as he walked off after scoring a well-made 38 off 26 deliveries, which included six boundaries. It was a crucial breakthrough for PBKS, halting RR’s momentum momentarily.
At the end of the 11th over, RR stood strong at 92 for 1, with Yashasvi Jaiswal nearing his half-century on 45 and Riyan Parag joining him at the crease.
