Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is confident that Shubman Gill would score runs in the forthcoming Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Gill, who captains the Indian team, had a quiet day at Lord’s, being removed for 16 and 6 in his two innings. India went on to lose the third Test by 22 runs, leaving the five-match series 1-2. Manjrekar stated that the eight-day break between the third and fourth Tests could be useful for Gill, allowing him to ponder and refocus.
“I feel he has the ability to continue his form. During this pause, he may reflect on the recent altercation and speak with his friends and father about it. He only needs to concentrate on his captaincy, fielding, strategy, and batting. If he does, I feel the run-making machine that was previously in motion would be well-oiled and ready to go at Old Trafford,” Manjrekar told JioHotstar, as published by India Today.
Manjrekar said that the squad performed admirably in the first innings, despite Gill’s modest contribution. He saw this as a good takeaway, implying that the hitting unit had optimistic indicators even without a specific individual making an effect.
“His participation is essential, but India will also consider the fact that Gill did not contribute with the bat in the third Test at Lord’s. Despite this, India’s batting lineup managed to push England.
So, that’s a nice takeaway: we’re not entirely reliant on Shubman Gill,” Manjrekar concluded.
Gill remained the star performance in the current Test series against England. Since taking over as captain, the 25-year-old has been in perhaps the finest form of his career, topping the run-scoring charts with 607 runs in three matches. He opened the series with a stunning 147 at Headingley, Leeds, and followed it up with outstanding hits of 269 and 161 in two innings at Edgbaston. There is every anticipation that the Indian captain will try to recover, especially because India hopes to even the series.
