Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believed Akash Deep worked too hard to take a wicket, which was one of the primary reasons for his ineffectiveness on the first day of the third Test between England and India. The cricketer-turned-commentator’s comments came after Deep failed to take a wicket in the 17 overs bowled on Day 1.
Manjrekar observed that Deep lacked the control he showed at Edgbaston, where he took four and six wickets in the first and second innings, respectively.
“I believe Akash Deep was just overly enthusiastic, which is a typical mistake among bowlers. He took 10 wickets in his last outing, bowling first because he expected some movement and an attempt to take a wicket with each ball. What he lost in the process was control and simplicity, which were his strongest weapons and the basis for his success in the previous Test, according to Manjrekar, as reported.

Manjrekar predicted that the hosts will score a large first innings total, which India would be expected to match in the coming days.
“Jamie Smith is up to bat, and Chris Woakes will bat better on this pitch, so you can’t rule out a huge score whether Joe Root plays or not. With their current level of confidence, India is projected to post another high score. Manjrekar remarked that the way these two teams are playing is similar to a conventional tennis match.
India could only take four wickets on the first day of play. Joe Root (99* off 191) and Ben Stokes (39* off 102) were the only batters who went unbeaten at Stumps. Nitish Kumar Reddy (2/46 in 14 overs) took two wickets, both of which came in his opening over of the match.
