On Thursday, August 10, Welsh Fire Women and Birmingham Phoenix Women squared off at Edgbaston, Birmingham, in match fourteen of the ongoing The Hundred Women’s 2023 competition. Although the game had its ups and downs, Shabnim Ismail, 34, set the stage on fire with a spectacular hat-trick that helped Welsh Fire triumph.
Welsh Fire needed to defend the target and bring the team home after scoring 137 runs in their allotted 100 balls, which they successfully did. Phoenix had five balls remaining in the game’s closing stages and needed nine runs to win.
Shabnim Ismail entered the fray to bowl, but she found herself in a tough spot after giving up five runs in the first two balls of the over.
With a spectacular hat-trick, the 34-year-old did, however, shortly win it back. Ismail helped her team to a three-run victory by taking wickets on the game’s 98th, 99th, and 100th deliveries. Tess Flintoff, Erin Burns, and Issy Wong were all dismissed by her, allowing her to win the match and go down in history. She distinguished herself by becoming just the second female bowler to record a hat-trick.
