In the ninth game of the current Women’s Premier League, Shafali Verma grabbed control of Gujarat Giants with the bat and led her team to a stunning 10-wicket victory. Verma scored an unbroken 76 and reached her half-century in the game in just 28 deliveries while chasing a 106-run target.
Shafali Verma completed the chase in just 7.1 overs after reaching his second-fastest half-century of the tournament so far.
Verma scored a significant amount of runs, but Meg Lanning, the team’s captain and opening partner, played second fiddle, scoring 21* off 15 runs. Verma batted at a strike rate of 271.43, and her explosive innings featured 10 fours and five sixes.
Following the improbable triumph, Shafali Verma was all praise for captain Lanning. She hailed the Aussie celebrity for providing insightful guidance that enabled her to outwit the Gujarat Giants’ bowling lineup.
“I wasn’t in a rush, but I tried to give the run chase my all. We can now relax and have fun. I left the game while watching the movie in the previous one. So I made an effort to act impartial. For her guidance, I’d want to thank Lanning. I want to put in a lot of effort in the future to continue scoring goals and playing the same way. She thanked Meg, all of her teammates, and her family in a statement to the tournament announcers.
Meg and I just continued helping each other, which is very beneficial on the field. At the same time, Verma Delhi Capitals also recorded the highest powerplay score in the WPL. As Shafali Verma went for the big shots and punished the opposing bowlers, she was in the zone. The 19-year-old and Lanning combined to score 87 runs in the first six overs to maximize the powerplay.
“We considered giving our all. Meg and I were aware that we could not approach this target carelessly. We just continued lending a hand to one another, which is quite beneficial on the ground. The pitch was excellent for batting. In the following games, we’ll attempt to maintain the same level of performance, Shafali Verma said.
The next match between the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore will take place at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. After losing all four of their games so far, the Royal Challengers will keep trying to win the tournament, while Delhi will be more confident after claiming all of their victories thus far in spectacular fashion.
