Shakib Al Hasan will represent Dubai Capitals in the Global Super League 2025. The franchise confirmed the signing of the star all-rounder via social media on Sunday, July 6. He has been signed to replace Keshav Maharaj, who sustained an injury during the recently finished first Test between Zimbabwe and South Africa in Bulawayo and will be unable to participate in the next competition.
There were numerous rumours that Shakib might be retained by Rangpur Riders for GSL 2025. However, the team management then stated in an official statement that he could not be maintained on the team due to the unpredictable political environment in Bangladesh, which also affected Shakib.
The Bangladeshi cricketer last appeared in the 2025 Pakistan Super League for the Lahore Qalandars. He participated as a substitute player. He played three PSL matches following a six-month break since his last appearance. Notably, Shakib’s left-arm spin had been suspended due to illegitimate bowling action and other concerns, which were ultimately resolved.
Shakib Al Hasan former franchise, Rangpur, led by Nurul Hasan, won the inaugural GSL season.
Aside from Rangpur and Dubai, the five-team event will feature Hobart Hurricanes (from the Big Bash League), hosts Guyana Amazon Warriors (from the Caribbean Premier League), and Central Districts (from Super Smash).
GSL 2025 is scheduled to kickstart proceedings on Thursday, July 10. The tournament opener will be played between Dubai Capitals and Central Districts. All the matches will be played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. The format of the tournament is such that each team will play the other once, and the teams ending up in the top-two spots will square off in the summit clash.
Shakib, who has already taken retirement from Tests and T20Is, last played an ODI for Bangladesh in November 2023 at the Cricket World Cup in India. The seasoned 38-year-old all-rounder has not been considered in the 50-over side since then.
