Shreyas Iyer has received accolades from both fans and analysts for his astute leadership abilities after leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) final for the first time in 11 years. The Mumbai hitter not only led the team effectively, but also performed admirably with the bat, accumulating 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07.
Shreyas also excelled in the 2025 Champions Trophy, helping India win the trophy for the first time since 2013. He finished the global tournament with the second-highest number of runs.
While the Indian batter was snubbed by the selectors when they selected India’s squad for the upcoming five-match Test tour of India, it appears that he may receive some good news in the coming days. According to a report in the Indian Express on Saturday (June 7), the 30-year-old has officially entered India’s white-ball captaincy competition.
“Right now, he just plays ODIs, but after the IPL, we won’t be able to keep him out of T20 internationals or Tests. In addition, he has now officially entered the white-ball captaincy race,” one of Indian cricket’s prominent decision-makers was cited as saying in the newspaper.
Shreyas, who has played 14 Tests, 70 ODIs, and 51 T20Is, will play in India’s longest format in February 2024. In December 2023, he made his final T20I appearance against Australia at home. Shreyas is presently heading the SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the upcoming T20 Mumbai 2025.
Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy records in List A in T20 cricket
Shreyas has captained in 100 T20 matches so far. Under his leadership, teams have won 61 games and lost 37. Meanwhile, in List A cricket, the right-handed batter had led teams to 29 wins from 42 games. He has lost only 10 List A matches as captain.
Shreyas’ next appearance for Team India is expected to be in August 2025 when the Men in Blue travel to Bangladesh to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.
