On Saturday morning, the BCCI released a statement stating that Shreyas Iyer “is now stable and recovering well” after being released from the Sydney hospital where he had been taken for internal bleeding and a spleen injury sustained during India’s third ODI against Australia on October 25.
“The damage was quickly located, and after a quick operation, the bleeding was stopped right away. He has received the proper medical care for the same,” the statement stated, citing secretary Devajit Saikia. “He is steadily recovering now. His rehabilitation has impressed the BCCI medical team, which includes specialists in Sydney and India. He was released from the hospital today.
Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India assisted Dr. Koroush Haghighi and his staff in Sydney in treating Shreyas Iyer.
It stated, “Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for his follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly.”
The injury occurred during the Sydney ODI when Shreyas Iyer dismissed Alex Carey with a catch while sprinting backwards from point. He instantly gripped his rib cage and made a gesture for help. He was removed from the field and didn’t come back for the rest of Australia’s innings.
After losing the first two matches in Perth and Adelaide, India lost the three-match series 2-1, but they won the third ODI by nine wickets. In the T20I series that has followed the ODIs, they have lost two games and are now behind 1-0.
