The Punjab Kings (PBKS) will be led by Shreyas Iyer in the 2025 Indian Premier League. He has also stated that he would prefer to bat at number three for the team in the league. The Champions Trophy victor responded to the question of batting at this number with assurance.
Iyer’s past two years have been remarkable. He won his maiden IPL championship with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as captain, and he finished as his team’s top run scorer in the Champions Trophy. The 30-year-old batter, who will now become the 17th player to captain the team, went into great depth about his hitting position during the press conference, which also included Ricky Ponting, the head coach of PBKS. As a batter, Iyer has also stated that he is definite about his favored position. It will also be intriguing because he batted for the Knight Riders at number four or lower the previous season.
We already know that the Indian Premier League is a crucial aspect of Indian cricket, thus my main aim is on ranking No. 3 if I were to mark myself at any place in T20. It wouldn’t be accurate to claim that we are strategizing and considering the number I will bat. This time, I’m very clear about my stance. And I’ll be paying attention to that figure. The PBKS captain stated, “As long as the coach gives me the go-ahead.”

Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer reunion
Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer have previously served together as head coach and captain, having done so while they were teammates with the Delhi Capitals from 2019 to 2021. These were also Shreyas Iyer’s first spells as an IPL team captain.
The Capitals also made three consecutive trips to the playoffs over those three years. In 2020, they advanced to their first IPL final, but they were upset by the Mumbai Indians, losing by five wickets. The game also saw Iyer play an undefeated knock of 65 off 50 deliveries.
