prior Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes Shubman Gill’s captaincy is a combination of three prior Indian captains. Interestingly, according to the renowned cricketer, neither of them were MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, or Rohit Sharma.
The common factor among all three was that they had led India to a Test series victory in England.
“It’s worth noting that India has won only three Test series in England. In 1971 under Ajit Wadekar, 1986 under Kapil Dev, and 2007 under Rahul Dravid. All three were the coolest skippers you could possibly want for. “The laconic style of Wadekar, the rip-roaring yet controlled style of Kapil, and the intense and thoughtful method of Dravid,” Gavaskar wrote in his Mid-Day column.
Gavaskar went on to detail which occasions in the series made Shubman Gill seem like a combination of Ajit Wadekar, Kapil Dev, and Rahul Dravid.
“These three never got agitated, no matter what the scenario was, and their calm certainty was infectious. Shubman Gill in Birmingham resembled a combination of these three. Intense and iconic when scoring a double-century and a century, rip-roaring and thoughtful as his bowlers tore through England’s batting in both innings,” Gavaskar said.
The current series between England and India marks Gill’s debut as full-time Test captain. Despite a disappointing performance at Lord’s, he is presently leading the run-scoring rankings for both sides, with 607 runs in six innings at a staggering average of 101.16.
The Gill-led team is currently 2-1 down to England after losing by five wickets and 22 runs in the first and third Tests, respectively. The victory in Edgbaston was unprecedented for the Indian team. Gill shattered numerous records with scores of 269 and 161, respectively.
The fourth Test is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, July 23. The eagerly-anticipated contest will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester.
