Shubman Gill, the batter, went missing in his maiden season as Gujarat Titans captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. However, for the 2025 edition of the IPL, Gill has already established a strategy to decouple his batting from his role as captain.
“The more we keep batting and captaincy separate, the better it is,” Gill remarked at a news conference on Wednesday, March 19.
“In my experience, it is best if I do not mix it. When I go out to bat, the greatest thing for me is to play as a batter and make appropriate judgements. The captaincy position begins once I am dismissed, when we are fielding, or when we are off the pitch. “When I’m batting, I just focus on batting,” the 25-year-old revealed.
Shubman Gill scored only 426 runs in IPL 2024 and was not selected for India’s T20I team, which went on to win the T20 World Cup.
IPL 2024 was Gill’s worst season since joining the Titans, as he scored with a strike rate of 131 in the powerplay, the second lowest among all batters with at least 150 runs in the first six overs.
To improve, Gill plans to take on a particular challenge in the IPL 2025. He explained that, “The plan is to score as many runs as possible while losing as few wickets as possible.” As a batsman, it is my obligation to bat in a way that maximises our powerplay. That is what I strive for, and maybe we will correct the mistakes made last season.”
With the responsibility of captaincy and the opportunity to make a comeback in the Indian T20 side ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 at home, Gill’s season may make or break.
