Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has praised India’s incredible batsman Shubman Gill, who has surpassed Babar Azam to take the top spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings thanks to his outstanding play. Gill’s supremacy in this format has been widely acclaimed, and he has started to demonstrate it in the Champions Trophy with a game-winning century (101*) against Bangladesh in India’s opening Group A encounter on February 20.
He became one of the most tenacious batters in cricket history with this century, which was noteworthy as his fourth consecutive 50+ score.
Ahead of the ICC competition, Shubman Gill has already shown his purpose at the Narendra Modi stadium with a resounding 112 runs against England on February 12. Notably, he was named Player of the Match for his recent innings against Bangladesh, which helped India get past a difficult point.
Ponting considers Gill’s ascent to the top of the rankings to be admirable and worthy. His ranking as the world’s top batter right now is well-deserved. “The fact that he’s getting his account going early in the Champions Trophy opening match is a huge plus for India,” Ponting wrote on ICC Review.
Although Gill struggled to demonstrate his white-ball success in Test cricket, Ponting recognized his presence in limited-overs cricket. “He has been an exceptionally talented international player for a number of years. Over the past three or four years, his white-ball cricket has been exceptional,” he remarked.
Ponting was also enlightened on why he believes Shubman Gill plays ODI cricket.
In one-day cricket, he may be aggressive with the field up early in the powerplay. He makes fantastic, instinctive shots and can score goals whenever he wants,” he continued.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill of India has amassed an incredible 2,688 runs at an average of 62.51 in 51 One-Day Internationals, including eight hundreds. India’s next matchup with Pakistan is scheduled for February 23 at the Dubai International Stadium, and it’s definitely worth watching.
