Shubman Gill, Indian Test captain, had a momentary fright after colliding with Tevin Imlach during the second Test against the West Indies on October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. India, who had previously led the two-match Test series 1-0, found themselves in a comfortable position in the second match by the end of Day 1.
The incident happened in the 85th over, bowled by Anderson Phillip to Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal flicked a delivery firmly to the midwicket area, where a diving fielder made a sharp stop to his right.
Shubman Gill and Jaiswal rushed between the wickets in an attempt to get a quick single.
However, the throw to the wicketkeeper’s end was errant, and while attempting to avoid it, Gill collided with Imlach, the ball clipping the Indian captain’s shoulder in the process.
There was a slight delay while medical personnel attended to both players. A concussion test was performed as part of the routine practice following such crashes. In a light-hearted moment, Jaiswal jokingly performed a mock concussion test on Gill, causing smiles on the ground.
At the completion of the first day of play, India was 318/2, putting them in command. Earlier, Gill won the toss and chose to bat first, which proved wise. Sai Sudharsan had a controlled knock of 87 runs, while Jaiswal dominated the West Indian bowling attack with a stunning 173 not out off 253 balls, including 22 boundaries.
KL Rahul produced a consistent 38 runs, while Gill was undefeated on 20 at the finish of play. Jomel Warrican was the visitors’ only wicket-taker on the first day, ending with figures of 2 for 60, while the rest of the West Indian attack struggled to extract much from a hot and flat Delhi pitch.
The second day also promises to follow a similar pattern, with the batters expected to dominate once again. Jaiswal will look to reach yet another milestone, while Gill aims to add more memorable moments to his growing tally.
