Former cricketer Ravi Shastri praised India’s ace batter and skipper Shubman Gill for his stunning innings against England in the second Test of the ongoing series at Edbaston. Shastri compared Gill’s batting to that of legendary Sir Donald Bradman, claiming that his crucial knocks in both innings helped India win the Test match and tie the series 1-1 against the Three Lions.
Shastri believes the India captain’s 269 and 161 were vital in demonstrating his prowess in front of the world, followed by his captaincy in bowling England out. He also praised Gill for selecting Akash Deep in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who he believes will trouble many English hitters as the series progresses.
“The best by a captain, 10/10. You cannot ask for more from a captain. You are one down in the series. You come out there and bat like Bradman. 269 and 161, and you win the game,” Shastri stated on Sky Sports Cricket.
“Your captaincy was quite reactive during the first test match. You nearly followed the ball. You are really proactive in the next game. You may have just discovered the greatest seamer for English conditions in this Indian lineup by selecting Akash Deep, who will worry England as the series develops,” Shastri said following India’s victory in the second Test in Birmingham.
Shubman Gill has clearly been India’s best batter thus far in the series.
He started the first Test with a 147 in the first innings, but his team lost by five wickets on the last day. However, he rallied to deliver a match-winning knock in the second Test, becoming the first batter to score a 200-plus and a 150-plus total in the same game.
He will now lead his men into the third Test, which is scheduled to begin on July 10 at Lord’s. This will be Gill’s first game at the venue as captain, and he hopes to make it memorable by not only winning the game, but also getting his name on the Honours Board by scoring another triple-digit score in the series.
