If the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 did one thing, it was to cement 23-year-old Shubman Gill reputation as one of the best young hitters in the world. He had been in great shape for India, and as a member of the Gujarat Titans, he was without a doubt one of the best players on the team.
Before the season started, everyone was looking at Shubman Gill.
The 23-year-old was the best player in the race, and he even won the IPL orange cap at the end. During the event, he hit three centuries and scored 890 runs in 17 games. Shubman Gill, who is only 23 years old, also became the second-youngest player in IPL history to score the second-most runs in a single season.
Former India captain Kapil Dev praised Shubman Gill amazing performances in the event after seeing how well he was doing. He said that Shubman Gill is following in the footsteps of many great players, but he still needs another year to solidify himself as a truly great talent.
“First Sunil Gavaskar, then Sachin Tendulkar, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli. Now, Shubman Gill seems to be following in their paths with the way he bats. But I’d like to give him another season before making big claims. “He has talent and skill for sure, but he needs to grow up,” Kapil Dev told ABP News.
“If he keeps playing like this for another season, he could definitely join the list of great players. But I don’t want to put him in that league right now. He might need to wait another year. It’s too soon to tell,” he said.
Shubman Gill great play got Gujarat Titans to their second IPL final in two years. However, they didn’t make it all the way because Chennai Super Kings beat them in the final by five runs and won their fifth IPL title.
